This guide explains version 2.0.1 of the software alarm clock エChronomenon. ¥To use the information in this guide, the prerequisites are that you can use the more ¥commonly-used features of the Macintosh and that you have an understanding of basic ¥Macintosh terminology. ¥ This guide can be read through from beginning to end, or it can be used for reference. ¥エChronomenon ユs features are accessible while this guide is open, so it is possible for you¥to try things in エChronomenon as you read about them.¥ To navigate through the pages of the guide, you can do several things. One of them is to¥find the topic you want to read about in the Table of Topics, located at the beginning of the guide, ¥and click on it. The guide will then display the first page that deals with that topic. To flip ¥through the pages of the guide, you can simply use the mouse to click the buttons below labeled ¥、Previous Page and 、Next Page. Besides using the mouse to go through the pages of this ¥guide, you can also use the left and right arrow keys. The left arrow key is for displaying the ¥previous page and the right arrow key is for displaying the next page. Whatユs more, holding ¥either of these arrow keys down will make each page appear in sequence, starting from the page ¥that was displayed when the key was pressed, until either the first or last page of the guide is ¥encountered; holding down the left arrow key eventually brings up the first page, and holding ¥down the right arrow key eventually brings up the last page. If you prefer, instead of using the ¥arrow keys to go through the guideユs pages, you can use the Page Up and Page Down keys. To go ¥back to the beginning of the guide, you can click the button below labeled 、Table of Topics, ¥or you can press the Home key. Pressing the End key brings up the last page of the guide.¥ To make this guide appear, you have three options. One is to go into the 、Help (、?) menu ¥with the mouse pointer and choose 、Information on Chronomenon. Another is to use the ¥keyboard equivalent of 、Information on Chronomenon, which is Command-?. The final ¥option is to press the Help key.¥ To close this guide, you can click the guideユs close box. An alternate way to close this ¥guide is to use Command-W while the guide is the front object on the computer screen. ¥Command-W can also make エChronomenon ユs clock face or any movie you have opened up in ¥エChronomenon invisible. Which of these things Command-W closes or makes invisible ¥depends on which thing is front most. ¥ An attempt has been made to distinguish trademarks in this guide by adopting the ¥capitalization styles used by the owners of those trademarks. ¥¥¥」 ¥、BALLOON HELP IS AVAILABLE¥¥ This guide isnユt your only source of information on エChronomenon ユs features. Balloons ¥have been written specially for エChronomenon, and they can be accessed by selecting 、Show ¥Balloons from the 、Help (、?) menu. These balloons then come up and explain many of ¥the things in エChronomenon over which you put the mouse pointer. For instance, if you put ¥the mouse pointer over the 、Snooze Ten Minutes item in エChronomenon ユs 、Clock menu, a ¥balloon will appear which briefly explains that item.¥¥、INTRODUCTION TO 、エCHRONOMENON¥¥ エChronomenon is a software alarm clock and timer which, when its alarm goes off, is ¥capable of crowing like a rooster, displaying and speaking your text messages, playing ¥your QuickTime movies, and playing audio CDユs.
」¥、AN EXPLANATION OF THE APPEARANCE OF 、エCHRONOMENON、 ユS CLOCK FACE¥¥ When エChronomenon starts up, unless you choose for it to be invisible (more on this ¥later), a rectangular clock face appears. This clock face contains two other rectangles. The ¥smaller, top rectangle displays the time. It can display 12- or 24-hour time, depending on ¥for which one the computerユs Date & Time control panel is configured. The larger, bottom ¥rectangle, called the エclock screen, is for displaying various types of information. Before the ¥alarm goes off, the clock screen shows how much time is left, to the second, until the alarm ¥goes off. It also shows at what time and on what date it will go off. After the alarm does go off, ¥if you have supplied エChronomenon with a text message, that message will be displayed in the ¥clock screen. If you have not, there is a default message supplied by エChronomenon which is ¥displayed, if you have not deleted it.¥¥「¥、エCHRONOMENON 、CAN RUN BOTH IN THE FOREGROUND AND IN THE ¥BACKGROUND ¥¥ エChronomenon always runs once it is launched. You can switch to a different application ¥while it is running and エChronomenon will still run in the backgroundムムeven the alarm ¥will sound while it is in the background.¥」¥、SETTINGS AND DATA ARE SAVED¥¥ The rule of thumb in エChronomenon is, if you did it, it was saved. The main exception to ¥this rule occurs when you choose the 、Cancel button in dialog boxes, which causes changes ¥you made in them to not persist. ¥ The purpose of saving エChronomenon ユs settings and data is so that you can quit エChronomenon, ¥or you can shut off the computer, and the next time エChronomenon is launched, it will have ¥the same settings and data it had when last terminated. Because of this, even the alarmムムif ¥it had been set and it had not gone off when you quit エChronomenon or shut down the computer,¥and provided エChronomenon is restarted before the alarm time passesムムwill automatically ¥be reset to go off at the time it had previously been set to do so. ¥ If no changes you make in エChronomenon get saved, that probably means that the startup ¥disk is full, locked, or a CD, thus preventing エChronomenon from creating its preferences ¥file in the startup diskユs Preferences folder, a folder in the System Folder in which many ¥applications store their preferences. In such cases, エChronomenon will use its default ¥settings each time it is launched.¥」¥、SETTING THE TIME¥ ¥ The time displayed by エChronomenon is the same time as that to which the computerユs ¥internal clock is set. The computerユs internal clock, and thus エChronomenon ユs clock, can be ¥set using the computerユs Date & Time control panel or any other software designed to change ¥the time of the computerユs internal clock. (However, changing the computerユs time or date ¥setting while エChronomenon ユs alarm is set can affect when エChronomenon ユs alarm goes off ¥or even shut off the alarm. Please see the later section HOW CHANGING THE COMPUTERユS ¥TIME AND DATE SETTINGS AFFECTS エCHRONOMENON ユS ALARM for details.)¥」¥、SETTING THE ALARM¥ ¥ There are three different ways to set the alarm which are always available. One way to set ¥the alarm is with a clock time. Another way is to pick the hours, minutes, and seconds later for ¥the alarm to go off, for the purpose of using エChronomenon as a timer. The final way is to ¥set a snooze time of ten minutes. Each of these ways to set the alarm is explained in the sub-¥sections of this section. ¥ Setting the alarm when it has already been set will override the previous alarm setting. ¥This means that the alarm will go off for the last time it is set to do so, but it will not go off for ¥any previous setting of it. However, the alarm can be configured to be able to set itself to go off ¥at some default time which you may choose, which it will do if the alarm is not already set and ¥it is not going off. To find out about having the alarm set itself to the default alarm time, see the ¥next section titled SETTING THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME.¥」 ¥、Setting the Alarm with a Clock Time¥¥ The menu item 、Set Alarm with a Clock Time, located in the 、Clock menu, brings up ¥a dialog box which allows you to enter the time at which the alarm will go off. For instance, ¥if you want the alarm to go off at 12:00 PM, this dialog box lets you set the alarm for that time. ¥The dialog box provides three time-entry boxes: one is for the hour, the next is for the minute, ¥and the last is for the second at which you want the alarm to go off. You can specify whether ¥the time you enter is AM, PM, or a 24-hour time by choosing the appropriate button to the ¥right of the time-entry boxes. (However, choosing one of these buttons has no bearing on how ¥エChronomenon displays the time. To change エChronomenon ユs time display to 12- or 24-hour ¥mode, use the computerユs Date & Time control panel.) ¥ The dialog box gives you the option of providing a message for the clock screen to display ¥and, if desired and if speech is available, for the alarm to speak when the alarm goes off. How ¥to get the alarm to speak the message is explained a bit later in the section titled ADJUSTING ¥THE AMOUNT OF TIMES THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES SOUND WHEN THE ALARM GOES OFF.¥」¥、Setting the Alarm with Hours, Minutes, and Seconds¥¥ The menu item 、Set Alarm with Hours, Minutes, and Seconds, located in the 、Clock ¥menu, brings up a dialog box which allows you to use エChronomenon as a timer. It lets you set ¥how many hours, minutes, and seconds later the alarm will go off. As a timer, エChronomenon ¥can be set to go off up to five days in advance (エChronomenon can be set for a maximum of ¥seventy-two hours, 1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds, which, all added together, equal five ¥days). ¥ The dialog box, just like with the dialog box that comes up after selecting 、Set Alarm ¥with a Clock Time, also lets you provide a message for the clock screen to display and, if ¥desired and if speech is available, for the alarm to speak when the alarm time runs out. How ¥to get the alarm to speak the message is explained in a later section titled ADJUSTING THE ¥AMOUNT OF TIMES THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES SOUND WHEN THE ALARM GOES OFF.¥」¥、Setting the Alarm for Ten Minutes¥¥ エChronomenon ユs alarm can be set for ten minutes at a time by choosing the menu item ¥、Snooze Ten Minutes, located in the 、Clock menu.¥¥」¥、SETTING THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME¥¥ You can configure エChronomenon ユs alarm so that it will automatically set itself to go off at ¥a certain time each day of your choosing whenever the alarm is not already set and it is not ¥going off. This time is the default alarm time. To configure the alarm to be able to set itself ¥automatically to this time, choose 、Set the Default Alarm Time from the 、Clock menu. ¥This brings up a dialog box. To set the default alarm time, enter it in the time-entry boxes. To ¥make it so that the alarm is able to set itself to go off at this time automatically, check the ¥checkbox underneath the time-entry boxes. If at any time you decide you donユt want the alarm ¥to be able to automatically set itself, just uncheck this checkbox. ¥ Whenever the alarm has set itself to the default alarm time, if you then set the alarm ¥yourself to some other time, the alarm will no longer be set to go off at the default alarm time. ¥Once the alarm has gone off and has stopped or been stopped, however, the alarm will then reset ¥itself to the default alarm time, if it is still set up to do so. If you decide to cancel your setting ¥of the alarm and want the alarm set to the default alarm time instead, you can quickly get this ¥to happen by choosing 、Set Alarm to the Default Time from the 、Clock menu, which is ¥available whenever the alarm is still configured to be able to set itself to the default alarm ¥time. See the later section SETTING THE ALARM TO THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME to find out more ¥about this menu item.¥」¥、SHUTTING OFF THE ALARM¥¥ Provided that エChronomenon ユs alarm is not configured to be able to set itself automatically ¥to the default alarm time, the menu item 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen will be ¥available in the 、Clock menu. If thatユs the case, then to shut the alarm off at any time, whether ¥before it goes off or while it is going off, choose 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen. ¥The clock screen then displays the message メThe alarm is not setモ at the top while displaying ¥nothing else. ¥ Whenever エChronomenon ユs alarm is configured to automatically set itself to the default ¥alarm time, the 、Clock menu item 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen changes to 、Set ¥Alarm to the Default Alarm Time. See the section a little further ahead titled SETTING ¥THE ALARM TO THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME to find out about the result of choosing this menu ¥item. To find out about the default alarm time, see the previous section SETTING THE DEFAULT ¥ALARM TIME.¥」¥、CLEARING THE CLOCK SCREEN¥¥ Provided that エChronomenon ユs alarm is not configured to be able to set itself automatically ¥to the default alarm time, the menu item 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen will be ¥available in the 、Clock menu. If thatユs the case, then to clear the clock screen so that it ¥displays nothing but the sentence メThe alarm is not set,モ choose 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear ¥Clock Screen. ¥ Whenever エChronomenon ユs alarm is configured to automatically set itself to the default ¥alarm time, the 、Clock menu item 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen changes to 、Set ¥Alarm to the Default Alarm Time. See the next section to find out about the result of ¥choosing this menu item. To find out about the default alarm time, see the earlier section ¥SETTING THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME.¥」¥、SETTING THE ALARM TO THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME¥¥ Whenever エChronomenon ユs alarm is configured to be able to automatically set itself to the ¥default alarm time, the menu item 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen, located in the ¥、Clock menu, changes to 、Set Alarm to the Default Alarm Time. If the alarm is set to ¥a time other than the default alarm time, then this item will be highlighted, and choosing this ¥item will set the alarm to the default alarm time, which is indicated in the dialog box which ¥comes up after choosing the 、Clock menu item 、Set the Default Alarm Time. Whenever ¥the alarm is set to the default alarm time, the 、Set the Default Alarm Time item is ¥dimmed. To find out about the default alarm time, such as what it is, how to set it, and how to ¥make the alarm able to automatically set itself to that time, see the section titled SETTING THE ¥DEFAULT ALARM TIME, located earlier in this guide.¥」¥、SILENCING THE ALARM¥¥ The menu item for silencing the alarm is 、Silence Alarm, and it is located in the ¥、Clock menu. It has the keyboard equivalent Command-. for convenience. Alternately, the ¥Escape key can be used to silence the alarm. Of course, エChronomenon has to be the front ¥application for the keyboard equivalent or the Escape key to be effective. If the alarm is not ¥configured to be able to automatically set itself, the 、Silence Alarm menu item and the Escape ¥key merely silence the alarm and do not clear the clock screen of any message you may have ¥provided for the clock to display when the alarm goes off, so the message can still be read after ¥silencing the alarm. If, however, the alarm is configured to be able to automatically set itself, ¥the 、Silence Alarm menu item and the Escape key silence the alarm, but after that, the alarm ¥automatically sets to the default alarm time, and the clock screen displays information about ¥when the alarm will go off, as it does whenever the alarm is set. To find out about the default ¥alarm time, such as what it is, how to set it, and how to make the alarm set itself to that ¥time, see the section titled SETTING THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME, located earlier in this guide.¥「¥、HOW CHANGING THE COMPUTERユS TIME AND DATE SETTINGS AFFECTS ¥、エCHRONOMENON、 ユS ALARM¥¥ If エChronomenon ユs alarm is in a set state and hasnユt gone off, then changing either the ¥computerユs time or date settingムムby using the Date & Time control panel or any other ¥software which can change the time or date settingムムcan trigger the alarm, cause the alarm ¥to shut off, or, if the alarm is configured to be able to set itself to the default alarm time, cause ¥the alarm to set itself to that time. After changing the computerユs time or date setting while the ¥alarm is set, you should check エChronomenon ユs clock screen to make sure the alarm is still ¥set and, if it is, that it is set to the desired time and date. ¥ If you are using the alarm as a timer, or if you set the alarm by choosing the 、Clock menu ¥item 、Snooze Ten Minutes, and, while the alarm is set, you change the computerユs time or ¥date setting, then even if the alarm is still set to the same time and date as it was before ¥changing the computerユs time or date setting, it is probably not set as you would wish. This is ¥because changing the computerユs time or date setting to a setting that doesnユt trigger the alarm, ¥shut the alarm off, or cause the alarm to set itself to the default alarm time increases or ¥decreases the amount of time it takes for the alarm to go off. This is fine if you want the alarm ¥to go off at a certain time, as is the case when you set the alarm with a clock time. This is not ¥desirable, though, if you want the alarm to go off in precisely a certain エamount of time, as is ¥probably the case if you use エChronomenon as a timer or set the alarm by choosing the 、Clock ¥menu item 、Snooze Ten Minutes. Therefore, if you change the computerユs time or date ¥setting, and if エChronomenon is being used as a timer or if the alarm was set by choosing ¥the 、Clock menu item 、Snooze Ten Minutes, you should consider resetting the alarm.¥ To find out about the different ways the alarm can be set, see the earlier sections SETTING ¥THE ALARM, SETTING THE DEFAULT ALARM TIME, and SETTING THE ALARM TO THE DEFAULT ¥ALARM TIME. ¥ The following paragraphs of this section provide details explaining how エChronomenon ユs ¥alarm is affected when the computerユs time or date setting is changed:¥ As mentioned before, changing either the computerユs time or date setting can trigger the ¥alarm. This happens if エChronomenon ユs alarm is set, エChronomenon is running, and the ¥computerユs date setting is, or is changed to, the same date as エChronomenon ユs alarm date but ¥the computerユs time setting is set to or beyond the time the alarm is supposed to go off. It also ¥happens if エChronomenon ユs alarm is set, エChronomenon is running, and the computerユs date ¥setting is changed to a date beyond the date the alarm is supposed go off. ¥ The next two paragraphs discuss the conditions under which changing either the computerユs ¥time or date setting shuts the alarm off or causes the alarm to be set to the default alarm time:¥ Suppose エChronomenon is not running but the alarm has been set. Then suppose that the ¥computerユs date setting is, or is changed to, the same date as the alarm date, but the computerユs ¥time setting is, or is changed to, a time that is equal to, or beyond, the alarm time, and ¥エChronomenon is then launched. Or suppose that the computerユs date setting is, or is changed ¥to, a date beyond the date the alarm is supposed go off, and then エChronomenon is launched. ¥Provided エChronomenon ユs alarm is not configured to automatically set itself, the alarm will ¥no longer be set. If the alarm is configured to automatically set itself, it will then be set for ¥the default alarm time.¥ Finally, suppose that エChronomenon is running, and suppose it is being used as a timer or ¥the alarm has been set using the 、Clock menu item 、Snooze Ten Minutes. Now suppose that ¥the computerユs date setting is, or is changed to, the same date as the alarm date but the ¥computerユs time setting is set to a time before the time the alarm was set. Or suppose that the ¥computerユs date setting is changed to a date before the date the alarm was set. Provided ¥エChronomenon ユs alarm is not configured to automatically set itself, the alarm will no longer ¥be set. If the alarm is configured to automatically set itself, it will then be set for the default ¥alarm time. If エChronomenon is not running but the alarm was set before one of the just-¥mentioned supposed changes to the time or date setting takes place, then if エChronomenon is ¥launched before the reoccurrence of the time and date the alarm was set, the alarm will no ¥longer be set or, if the alarm is configured to automatically set itself, it will be set for the ¥default alarm time. However, if エChronomenon is launched during or after the reoccurrence ¥of the time and date the alarm was set but before the occurrence of the alarm time and date, the ¥alarm will be set to go off as before, which, as already mentioned, may not be desirable (see ¥the second paragraph of this section), so you should consider resetting the alarm.¥」¥、CREATING, CHANGING, OR VIEWING THE ALARM MESSAGE¥¥ The alarm message can be created, changed, or viewed at the time the alarm is set (this is ¥not true if the 、Clock menu item 、Snooze Ten Minutes is used to set the alarm, however), ¥or it can be created, changed, or just viewed at any other time by choosing 、Create, Change, ¥or View Alarm Message from the 、Clock menu.¥「¥、ADJUSTING THE AMOUNT OF TIMES THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES SOUND WHEN ¥THE ALARM GOES OFF¥ ¥ Each of the alarm sound sources can be independently set to sound from zero to 32,767 ¥times. They can also be independently set to sound forever. ¥ The 、Clock menu item 、Set Crowing, Speaking, and Movie-Playing Times brings ¥up a dialog box which allows for the adjustments of the times that the alarm crows, speaks, and ¥plays QuickTime movies. Adjustment of the number of times messages are spoken is possible if ¥speech is available on your computer, and adjustment of the number of times QuickTime movies ¥are played is possible if QuickTime is available on your computer. If QuickTime is available, ¥the dialog box allows for an interval between movie plays to be set in one-second increments. ¥ The 、Clock menu item 、Set Up Audio CD Playing brings up a dialog box which, among ¥other things discussed in a section further ahead titled エCHRONOMENON AND AUDIO CD PLAYING,¥allows for the adjustment of the times that the alarm plays audio CDユs. As long as the checkbox ¥titled 、CD Plays After Alarm Is Silenced (the purpose of this checkbox is explained in ¥the エCHRONOMENON AND AUDIO CD PLAYING section) is not checked, CDユs can be set up to ¥play either a finite amount of times, that is, from zero to 32,767 times, or an infinite amount ¥of times. If that checkbox is checked, however, CDユs can still be set up to play an infinite ¥amount of times (or at least until you shut off the alarm), but if theyユre set up to play a finite ¥amount of times, they can only be set up to play zero times or once. This is because if the ¥checkbox is checked, the CD-driver software, which is not part of エChronomenon, will then ¥play the CDユs without エChronomenon ユs assistance, and it can only be set to play CDユs once¥or infinitely. ¥」¥、SETTING THE VOLUMES OF THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES¥¥ To set the volume of the built-in rooster crow, speech for the alarm messages, and the ¥volume at which the alarm plays audio CDユs, choose 、Set Volumes from the 、Clock menu. ¥The appearance of volume-control buttons for speech and audio CD playing depend on whether ¥or not speech and audio CD playing are available on your computer. If you have opened up a ¥QuickTime movie with エChronomenon, its volume can be adjusted by the volume control slider ¥attached to the movie window. ¥ There is a checkbox underneath the volume-control buttons for audio CDユs titled 、Alarmユs ¥Initial CD Volume Can Be Set Externally. When this checkbox is checked, that means ¥other applications can set the initial volume at which the alarm plays audio CDユs. If it is not ¥checked, then whenever the alarm goes off while the alarm is set up to play audio CDユs, ¥エChronomenon will set the audio CD volume to the level indicated by the selected audio CD ¥volume-control button.
」¥、CHANGING VOICES¥¥ If speech is available, your computer may have more than one voice installed. If so, ¥you can choose the voice you desire to speak your alarm message by choosing 、Choose ¥Voice from the 、Clock menu, which will present a submenu of all available voices by ¥name. Just choose whichever voice you want from this submenu. That voice will then say its ¥name so that you will hear what it sounds like and hear how loud it is. If the voice doesnユt ¥sound like itユs at the right volume, you can adjust its volume by choosing the 、Clock menu ¥item 、Set Volumes, as described in the prior section of this guide, titled SETTING THE ¥VOLUMES OF THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES.¥¥¥¥「¥、CHANGING THE COLOR OF THE TIME DISPLAY AND OF THE TEXT THAT APPEARS ¥IN THE CLOCK SCREEN¥¥ To change the color of the time display, and to change the color of text that appears in the ¥clock screen, choose 、Set Time and Text Color from the 、Clock menu, which will present ¥a list of colors in a submenu for you to choose from.¥ー¥、QUICKTIME MOVIES AND 、エCHRONOMENON¥」¥、Opening QuickTime Movies with 、エChronomenon¥ ¥ If QuickTime is available on your computer, you can open up a QuickTime movie with ¥エChronomenon by choosing 、Open a QuickTime Movie from the 、File menu. Another movie ¥can be opened in the same way too, which will take the place of the old movie. The old movie ¥will be automatically closed.¥」¥、Playing QuickTime Movies with 、エChronomenon¥¥ If you have set up エChronomenon to do so, エChronomenon will play any movie that is opened ¥in it when the alarm goes off. Please see the section titled ADJUSTING THE AMOUNT OF ¥TIMES THE ALARM SOUND SOURCES SOUND WHEN THE ALARM GOES OFF, a prior section, ¥for information on getting the alarm to play the QuickTime movie. ¥ The QuickTime movie opened up in エChronomenon can be played and stopped any time ¥the alarm isnユt playing it by using the mouse to press the movieユs play button, by double ¥clicking in the movie screen (the movie screen is present if the movie is not sound-only), ¥by pressing the space bar, or by pressing the Return key (the movie window must be selected ¥for the mouse, the space bar, or the Return key to affect the movie, of course). However, when ¥the alarm is playing the movie, the movie can only be played by the alarm, and it can only be ¥stopped by choosing 、Silence Alarm, 、Turn Off Alarm/Clear Clock Screen, or 、Set Alarm ¥to the Default Alarm Time from the 、Clock menu.¥ エChronomenon saves the name and location of QuickTime movies to its preferences file, ¥so each time エChronomenon is started, your QuickTime movie will automatically be opened ¥up by エChronomenon, ready for the alarm to play it when the alarm is set. However, if you ¥move the movie to a different folder or change the movieユs name, エChronomenon will not ¥open it up again automatically. If you want エChronomenon to still use that movie, you must ¥first open it up again yourself by choosing 、Open a QuickTime Movie from エChronomenon ユs¥、File menu. エChronomenon will, from then on, automatically open up the movie again each ¥time エChronomenon is started.¥」¥、Closing QuickTime Movies¥¥ To close a QuickTime movie, choose 、Close the QuickTime Movie from エChronomenon ユs ¥、File menu. If a movie is closed, it is not used by エChronomenon and the alarm will not play ¥it. However, the movie can be hidden rather than closed, in which case it can still be played by ¥エChronomenon ユs alarm. See the section A QUICKTIME MOVIE OPENED UP WITH エCHRONOMENON¥CAN BE MADE INVISIBLE OR VISIBLE, located further ahead, for information on hiding QuickTime ¥movies.¥」¥、エCHRONOMENON 、AND AUDIO CD PLAYING¥¥ エChronomenon can play audio CDユs when the alarm goes off if your computer has an ¥internal or external CD drive, and the computer has appropriate CD-driver software ¥installed.¥¥¥」¥、Inserting a CD¥¥ To insert a CD for エChronomenon to play, follow the instructions provided by the ¥manufacturer of the CD drive which you are using. (Also, make sure エChronomenon is set up ¥to use that drive; see the sub-section エChoosing the CD Drive for Chronomenon エto Use to find ¥out about how to choose a CD drive for エChronomenon to use for playing audio CDユs.) Each ¥time a CD is inserted into a CD drive, it takes a few moments for エChronomenon to recognize ¥its presence. Once the CD is recognized by エChronomenon, the alarm can play the CD if the ¥alarm is set up to do that and the drive the alarm is using is on (make sure of this if the drive ¥is external).¥」¥、Ejecting a CD¥¥ To eject a CD, go into the 、File menu and choose the menu item 、Eject the CD. This will ¥eject a CD from the drive that エChronomenon is currently using. You can also eject a CD by ¥using the keyboard equivalent Command-E. If the drive youユre ejecting from is external, make¥sure it is on before attempting to eject a CD from it.¥」¥、Choosing the CD Drive for エ、Chronomenon 、to Use¥¥ If your computer has only one CD drive, エChronomenon, of course, plays CDユs using that drive. ¥If your computer has more than one CD drive, however, エChronomenon gives you a choice of ¥which drive to use. To select your desired drive, choose 、Set Up Audio CD Playing from ¥the 、Clock menu. The dialog box which comes up allows you to choose the drive from a pop-up ¥menu located at the upper right of the dialog box. The drive numbers which appear in the pop-¥up menu correspond to each CD drive you have attached to your computer. However, unless you ¥have only one CD drive, which CD drive corresponds to what number is not obvious, so, to be ¥sure the desired CD drive is selected for the alarmムムat least until you learn which drives ¥correspond to what numbersムムyou should test the alarm to see which CD drive it uses for each ¥drive number until the CD drive you want has been selected. Only one CD drive is available for ¥the alarm to use each time エChronomenon is run, so to use any newly selected drive, you will ¥need to restart エChronomenon. Then that CD drive is available for use by the alarm. The ¥currently available CD drive is always indicated above the pop-up menu.¥ There is a chance that エChronomenon will not display a number for some CD drive. If ¥thatユs the case, make sure the drive is on and make sure that a CD is inserted in the drive. Then ¥try restarting エChronomenon. If the drive number still doesnユt appear somewhere in the pop-¥up menu, try restarting the computer and then restarting エChronomenon, making sure the CD ¥is put back in the drive if the computer ejected it. Also check to see that the CD drive is connected ¥and set up according to the manufacturerユs instructions. If none of those things work, you ¥might have a type of drive which your CD driver doesnユt recognize. The solution to that is to ¥get an upgrade of your CD driver.¥」¥、Setting Up How エ、Chronomenon 、Plays CDユs¥¥ You have a choice as to whether or not CDユs play after the alarm is otherwise silenced and ¥even after quitting エChronomenon. This means that it is possible to silence crowing, speaking, ¥and QuickTime movies which are being played by the alarm, while allowing CDユs to continue ¥playing. If you would like CD playing to continue after the alarm is silenced, make sure that ¥the checkbox titled 、CD Plays After Alarm Is Silenced, which is available in the dialog ¥box which comes up after choosing 、Set Up Audio CD Playing from the 、Clock menu, is ¥checked. If, however, you would like for CD playing to stop when the alarm is silenced, make ¥sure the checkbox is not checked. In the case where CDユs play after the alarm is silenced, one ¥way to stop CD playing, then, is to go into the 、Clock menu and choose the item 、Stop Audio CD. ¥Another way is to use other CD-playing software which provides the means to stop CD playing. ¥In fact, it may, at times, be more convenient to use other CD-playing software to stop CD ¥playing, such as when エChronomenon is not running and other CD-playing software is. If a ¥CD is playing when you shut down the computer, the computer itself will stop the CD.¥ By default, whenever the alarm is set and a CD is set to be played by the alarm one or more ¥times, エChronomenon warns you if there is no CD in the current CD drive or if whatever CD is ¥in the drive has no audio tracks on it. That way, in case you forgot that the alarm was supposed ¥to play CDユs when the alarm goes off, you will be reminded so that you can decide whether to ¥put an audio CD in the drive or forgo having the alarm play a CD. By the time you get used to¥the idea that the consequence of ejecting a CD or of inserting a CD with no audio tracks is that ¥the alarm canユt do any CD playing, you may wish to turn the warnings off. To do this, go into the ¥、Clock menu and choose the item 、Set Up Audio CD Playing. The dialog box that comes up ¥provides two checkboxes on the left side labeled 、Warn When CD Is Not Present and 、Warn ¥When CD Has No Audio. If theyユre checked, that means the warnings are on, so click the ¥boxes to uncheck them, so that the warnings are off. You may choose just to turn one of the ¥warnings off, if you want. If later you decide that you want one or both of the warnings, you can ¥get the desired warning or warnings back by clicking the appropriate checkbox or checkboxes ¥to a checked state. ¥ エChronomenon can be set up to play a CD from beginning to end, to play just the CD tracks ¥you select in the order you arrange, or to play all of a CDユs tracks in a random order. The ¥default is for エChronomenon to play a CD from beginning to end. ¥ To select the play method that you wish エChronomenon to use, choose 、Set Up Audio CD ¥Playing from the 、Clock menu. The dialog box which comes up allows you to choose one of ¥three buttons, labeled 、Normal, 、Program, and 、Shuffle. If you wish for エChronomenon to ¥play a CD from beginning to end, click the button labeled 、Normal. If you wish for エChronomenon ¥to play the CD tracks you select, click the button labeled 、Program. If you wish for エChronomenon ¥to play a CDユs tracks in a random order, click the button labeled 、Shuffle. ¥ On the right side of the dialog box are three lists. The lists, like the buttons just explained, ¥are labeled 、Normal, 、Program, and 、Shuffle. ¥ If an audio CD is inserted in the currently available CD drive, the first list, labeled 、Normal,¥will display a sequence of numbers representing all the audio tracks available on that CD.¥ If you wish to set up your own arrangement of tracks for エChronomenon to play, you can ¥do this by clicking on one of the tracks you want in the list labeled 、Normal, and then ¥clicking in the list labeled 、Program. The 、Program list will then display that track. You ¥can repeat this procedure to add other tracks to the 、Program list, clicking underneath any ¥tracks which are already in the 、Program list. You may add any track more than once to this ¥list. This list has room for ninety-nine track entries. If you wish to change a track in the ¥、Program list to a different track, you can do this by first selecting the desired track in the ¥、Normal list and then clicking on the track you wish to change in the 、Program list. The ¥former track is then replaced by the desired track. By the way, track one is the default track¥if no track is selected in the 、Normal list, so clicking in the 、Program list with no track ¥selected in the 、Normal list puts track one in the 、Program list wherever the cursor is. ¥To delete a track from the 、Program list, if the track to delete is highlighted, press the ¥Delete key. The track will disappear. If the track you wish to delete isnユt highlighted, first ¥click on it (you will see this track change to whichever track is selected in the 、Normal list ¥if theyユre different, or to track one if none is selected). Then press the Delete key.¥ By clicking the 、Shuffle button, the third list, labeled 、Shuffle, will display a random ¥order of all the tracks on the currently inserted audio CD. To get a different random order of ¥CD tracks, click the 、Shuffle button again.¥ After setting up the way エChronomenon is to play an audio CD, that will be the way ¥エChronomenon will play that CD from then on as long as the CD stays inserted in the computerユs ¥current CD drive and the drive remains the current drive. If a different audio CD is inserted ¥while エChronomenon is running, エChronomenon clears the 、Program and 、Shuffle lists, and ¥it defaults to using the 、Normal list. The same thing happens if エChronomenon is not running ¥and any CD in the current drive is ejected, a different CD is inserted, and エChronomenon is ¥subsequently restarted, unless the newly inserted CD has the same number of audio tracks as ¥the former CD, in which case the track lists will be set up as before. Selecting a different CD ¥drive to be the current drive and then restarting エChronomenon while a CD is in that drive ¥also makes エChronomenon clear the 、Program and 、Shuffle lists and default to using the 、Normal ¥list, and this happens even if the CD in the newly selected drive has the same number of audio ¥tracks as any CD in the former drive. If there is no audio CD in エChronomenon ユs current CD ¥drive while エChronomenon is running, all CD track lists are cleared.¥「¥、エCHRONOMENON、 CAN BE SET TO START UP EACH TIME THE COMPUTER ¥STARTS UP¥¥ To make エChronomenon a startup item, make an alias of it and put the alias in the ¥Startup Items folder, which is located in the System Folder.¥」¥、エCHRONOMENON、 ユS CLOCK FACE CAN BE MADE INVISIBLE OR VISIBLE¥¥ エChronomenon ユs clock face can be made invisible either by clicking its close box or by ¥choosing 、Hide Clock Face from the 、Visibility menu. The ability to hide the clock face is ¥good for when the clock face does not need to be seen and you wish to reduce computer-screen ¥clutter. エChronomenon still runs even though the clock face is invisible. ¥ An alternate way to make エChronomenon ユs clock face invisible is to use Command-W while ¥the clock face is the front object on the computer screen. Command-W can also close this guide ¥or make any movie you have opened up in エChronomenon invisible. Which of these things ¥Command-W closes or makes invisible depends on which thing is front most. ¥ To make the clock face visible again, choose 、Show Clock Face from the 、Visibility menu.¥「¥、A QUICKTIME MOVIE OPENED UP WITH 、エCHRONOMENON 、CAN BE MADE ¥INVISIBLE OR VISIBLE¥¥ If you opened up a QuickTime movie with エChronomenon, it can be made invisible either ¥by clicking its close box or by choosing 、Hide Movie Window from the 、Visibility menu. ¥Movies which are hidden can still be played by the alarm and heard though not seen.
